Summary: Nagasumi goes out swimming one day when, alas, he drowns. As he falls to the sea floor, gasping for his last breath, a hand comes and saves him. A hand that, unfortunately for him, belongs to a beautiful mermaid. This mermaid is Sun Seto, the only daughter of the chief of the Seto Gang, a mermaid yakuza outfit. According to their laws, any human who sees a mermaid's real form must either be killed, or marry said mermaid. Facing death, Nagasumi chooses the only choice he has, and his life with Sun Seto begins. Review
Plot: Nagasumi realizes soon after his choice that things are never that simple when dealing with yakuza mermaids. Sun returns with Nagasumi and his family to Nagasumi's hometown, and begins going to school with him. What neither of them know is the horror that awaits them at school... The entire leadership of the Seto Gang are now teachers at their school, including Sun's dad who would rather kill Nagasumi than let him marry his daughter! And that's only the beginning of Nagasumi's troubles. Eventually, Sun Seto's greatest rival appears, followed by her friendly stalker, and Nagasumi is friends with the daughter of the Superintendent General of the Police, the natural enemy of the yakuza! Yes, I admit that I am going overboard here. In effect, the plot is simply about Nagasumi and Sun and their relationship together. To mix it up, they are bombarded from all sides by the varying people mentioned above, and others, which create the events of each episode. While the episodes are chronological, there is no true overarching plot past the concept that; Nagasumi and Sun are engaged, want to live together and get to know each other, and lots of other people out there don't like that for varying reasons and try to stop it. This simple premise creates a series of mini-plots that grow out of different characters and create great plot devices that enhance the series.
Characters: Colorful and crazy might be the best words to describe the characters of My Bride is a Mermaid. Every character has their own personality and own quirks. Some have impressive character depth considering the light and comedic nature of the show. Sun Seto and Nagasumi have the most depth, and often do things that are somewhat surprising. Lunar Edomae also has moments of surprising depth where she acts differently than you'd expect. Most other characters are used as plot devices and are quite shallow, but occasionally can surprise you. The best example of this comes in the form of Sun and Lunar's parents, Gozaburo Seto and "Lunar's Papa" are defined entirely by their desire to protect their daughters and make them happy. That being said, Lunar's Papa is one of the funnier characters in the show, and when you first see his hulking Mr. Universe body and stoic expression, not to mention the way he speaks, you likely will laugh. The same can be said for many of the other characters in the series, and the whole cast, from the deadly Shark Fujishiro to the phobic Kai Mikawa all have their purposes and all add something to the show. In all, it is a wonderful cast that never gets old throughout the series.
Presentation: The colors, sound, and animation of My Bride is a Mermaid does nothing but enhance the comedic value of the series. For example, in one scene, Nagasumi gets into a fight. Instead of showing Nagasumi in all his glory, it goes to a stick-figure battle with one stick having an N on his chest, and as the stick-figure does many amazing stickly moves, the other characters comment on how amazing he is. The whole thing is ridiculous, but fun to watch anyway. The animation and sound are not amazing, but the way it is used throughout the show more than makes up for it.
Entertainment Value: Extremely high. I have watched this show more than once, and every time I laughed and smiled just as much as I did the first time, which means it does not get old. The ridiculous plot combined with great characters and great use of events in the story make nearly every episode a laugh, and very few events fall flat. The show is over the top in a good way, but instead of going into the overly outrageous territory, it is suspended just on the cusp, which allows it to retain its humor. Action scenes are done in a number of different ways, so Shark Fujishiro trying to eat Nagasumi never feels the same no matter how many times it happens.
Rating: 9/10 - A ridiculous premise that leads to an amazingly humorous and action packed story worth watching more than once.
