American Music Awards 2016: Justin Bieber, Drake and Rihanna predicted to win big

The hottest names in music will flock to Los Angeles this weekend for the American Music Awards 2016. Bringing the pop awards season to a close, the night will celebrate the artists who have dominated the airwaves over the last 12 months, from Justin Bieber to Carrie Underwood and Adele.

Canadian rapper Drake has scored 13 nominations this year, trumping Michael Jackson's 1984 record of 11. Among these nominations are video of the year and collaboration of the year, with Drake nominated twice for the latter category.

Elsewhere, Rihanna and Justin Bieber tie with five nominations each. Competing for artist of the year are Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Rihanna.

The AMAs 2016 will be hosted by model Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

So who will come out on top in the main categories? IBTimes UK predict the acts most likely to triumph on Sunday night.

Favourite pop/rock album: Drake – Views

There hasn't been a bigger artist than Drake in 2016 and the facts of his success are staggering. The Canadian rapper had the biggest song of the summer with his single One Dance. His fourth studio album, Views, spent 13 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and has amassed more than one billion streams in the US alone.

Favourite pop/rock female artist: Rihanna

Rihanna finally made her official return to music in January after almost four years. Her eighth album, Anti, earned RiRi her second number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and the accompanying world tour, which spanned 75 dates, was well-received.

Of course, the Bajan singer also had one of the biggest singles of her career with Work, which was made all the more better for featuring her on/off boyfriend Drake.

Artist of the year: Justin Bieber

Bad boy Bieber released his fourth album, Purpose, late last year but it has really impacted in 2016. The Sorry singer has spent most of the year performing on his 96-date Purpose World Tour, which has grossed more than $100m. Aside from a few spells of onstage bad behaviour, Bieber's success has been relentless, including a guest appearance on Major Lazer's number one single, Cold Water.
