Adam Lambert's "Underground" - Song Review

Just as the withdrawal pains were kicking in...

We devoted Glamberts are barely getting over the high caused by the release of Adam Lambert's groundbreaking "Ghost Town", the lead single off his third studio album, The Original High (which unfortunately has not heated up the charts as expected), but the former American Idol contestant shares another track from the anticipated project, the R&B-leaning "Underground".

Released as the first countdown single, available by pre-ordering the parent album before its June 16 release date, the new "Underground" is a heartfelt, piano-driven ballad describing an unhealthy relationship Lambert currently finds himself entangled in. If Lambert is having trouble maintaining a loving relationship... then there is no hope for the rest of us!

While the lead single from The Original High immediately forces listeners out of their chair and to the nearest dancefloor, the new track takes a rather different approach. The sultry supportive beat is the perfect background for Lambert's smooth, emotional vocal performance as he puts his all into every line. "I'm hooked I can't cut you off, in my blood I'm gonna say it now, I want you, I need you, I want you to take me underground," he belts.

"Underground" does fall in line with some of Lambert's previously released ballads, however, the recent release sounds more tamed and slightly more haunting. That's not a bad thing. Without the pop loaded production, the delivery is stronger, more prominent and carries a heavy impact. Lambert did discuss his new music as more serious and less theatrical. He was right.

While promotion for "Ghost Town" is still in full swing - the track, the video, the Ellen performance were all amazing - sharing another piece of The Original High does not hurt. "Underground" could be a solid radio staple if ever released as an official single, but for right now, it's another commendable, emotional performance from the Glam King of Pop.
